I am a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience.  I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and I have completed a certification in the area of Parent Management Training or PMT.   In the early part of my career I received training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Over the part 30 years I have also taught both graduate and undergraduate courses in the areas of special education, behavior analysis, child development and abnormal psychology. I have a behavioral orientation which influences how I view mental health problems and their treatment. While I am certainly concerned and interested in how each person's history, genetics and past experiences shape their present behavior; I view behavior as primarily being influenced by learning.  if a particular behavior is learned then it can be unlearned.  Our initial meeting will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about how I work and whether my approach will be a good fit for your problem.  What you can expect from an initial session is a review of why you need help and your past history of receiving help.  I am interested in when you first began to experience your difficulties . It will certainly be important to know if you have any medical or physical issues that may be effecting your life.   I will be particularly interested in defining your problem and having an understanding of the circumstances in your life that are most likely to effect how you think, feel and behave.   It would be important to developed specific goals so that treatment is focused and so we will be able to evaluate whether you are changing.  Changing and getting better is a process that involves experimenting with new ideas and strategies.  I look at therapy and treatment as an opportunity to problem solve and generate new solutions.  I would be very interested in your ideas and what has worked in the past.   My personal style tends to be more directive with an emphasis on encouraging individuals and their families to develop specific strategies to increase frustration tolerance and an adaptive response to managing stress through experimentation and practice.
